Now available for pre-order, Caterpillar’s new D4 medium dozer will soon arrive in our Toromont Cat branches.

How does Cat’s completely redesigned and improved D6K2 hold up against older, competing models?

To find out, we compared the D4 (29,259 lb) with another mid-size tractor, John Deere’s JD700L, on key elements of visibility, operator comfort, and efficiency/productivity.

Visibility

Compared to its predecessor, D6K2, the only hint of a redesign on the D4’s exterior is a lower-sloping hood that provides a better view of the work area over the blade (the rest can be seen under the hood and in its improved performance). The result: up to 30% more visibility, translating into a gain of 10 feet* in front of the tractor, and improved construction site safety.

The other contender, the JD700L, also has a lower hood, but offers less visibility. Both models have similarities in terms of side view, but Caterpillar’s D4 once again has an edge with its narrower pillars.

Operator Comfort

For operators, the tractor’s cab is like their office! Both models feature their share of innovations in terms of comfort, such as enhanced soundproofing (50% less noise for John Deere) or a comfortable and adjustable seat. But once again, the D4 quickly takes the lead by offering more new standard features such as the rear camera, automatic temperature control (ATC) (both optional for the JD700L), and programmable/selectable bidirectional shifting.

Productivity and efficiency

Productivity is the #1 reason for choosing one model over another.

For years now, Caterpillar has been adding new technologies that come standard with its models to shift productivity into a new era and consolidate its position as market leader.

John Deere was late to address in-vehicle technology, and JD700L features similar to Cat Grade with Slope Assist™ are only offered as options.

Finally, Caterpillar's many other standard or optional innovations such as AutoCarry, Cat Grade with 3D, ARO (Attachment Ready Option) are lacking from its competitor, while

D4’s bidirectional closed-loop hydrostatic transmission confirms Cat’s supremacy in terms of performance.

VERDICT

Cat’s D4 beats John Deere’s JD700L on all three key elements of visibility, comfort, and performance, thanks to its many innovative standard features.
