[By Toromont Cat](https://blog.toromontcat.com/en/author/toromont-cat) March 31, 2021 [HEAVY EQUIPMENT](https://blog.toromontcat.com/en/topic/heavy-equipment) 1 minute read - [Tweet](https://twitter.com/share) ![](https://blog.toromontcat.com/hubfs/Blog_Small-excavators--buy-or-rent-.jpg) In our last article, *[How to choose the right excavator?](https://blog.toromontcat.com/en/how-to-best-choose-your-excavator),* we looked at the two biggest factors behind making the right choice as a function of your company’s needs.   Now that you’ve come down to a selection of small excavators, you’ll need to go through a similar process to determine whether it’s in your best interest to get a new or used machine, and similarly, to buy or to rent. Your project goals, their duration and the amount you have to invest need to guide your decision when you finally choose your next small excavator.   ## **A question of need and budget**   ### **Renting** Renting lets you carry out more contracts with a smaller investment, it offers greater flexibility, and it lets you test out next-generation models that can help with your decision later should you decide to buy one. You can always rent a small excavator for a required period of time. Easily and quickly accessible, rented equipment lets you react in an agile way to your temporary contracting needs. Currently, the Heavy Equipment Division has a limited number of small excavators available, but new machines are expected shortly.     To learn more about renting, read our article [*5 reasons why rent?*](https://blog.toromontcat.com/en/5-reasons-to-choose-heavy-equipment-rental)     #### **Buying new** By buying a new piece of equipment, you get the latest technology, performance enhancements and reduced maintenance costs as models are constantly being improved. You’ll also have the power to choose among the available models and options while enjoying the peace of mind afforded by our purchase guarantee\*. If this approach is for you, keep in mind that our newest line of small excavators will be arriving soon and you can order one right now. You can learn more on our [small excavator page. ](https://www.toromontcat.com/newproducts/406-equipment/464-excavators/265-small-excavators)    ##### **Buying used** You need a reliable machine for a longer term project but can’t commit to a major investment at this time? Used equipment can be a great choice for you. From mini-excavators to large shovels, some very recent models (2018 and 2019) could suit your needs as well as new equipment, and maybe more, as they are less expensive to purchase. Even an older machine with only a few hours on the clock can meet your needs. Fully inspected, used machines are all in excellent condition and ready to work   Whatever your decision, you can always count on our team of experts and specialists to guide you to the excavator that will best meet your expectations.       Visit the [Toromont Cat website](https://www.toromontcat.com/) to see all our models available for rent or purchase.   * \*Conditions may apply*   ###### About Company ![](https://blog.toromontcat.com/hubfs/BG_landing.jpg) [Toromont Cat](https://blog.toromontcat.com/en/author/toromont-cat) Toromont Cat is your Cat Dealer in Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nunavut.
